35 for each brother means 35*4, then simply add the remaining marbles to get the total:
4*35+219=359

"X" is the number of marbles Kelvin started with. He gave 35 to each of 4 brothers and had 219 left.
So X - 4*35 = 219. Or X = 219 + 4*35 = 219 + 140 = 359.
Kelvin therefore started with 359 marbles. But I bet he's glad that he didn't lose all of his marbles!
