P stands for parenthesis in PEMDAS, so solve what is inside first.

Michele, the parentheses mean to multiply.  First, according to PEMDAS, you have to do what's inside the parentheses, so you get (6)(1).  This means 6 x 1, which equals 6.

 

Anytime you have something next to parentheses, like 6(6) or (6)6, this means to multiply.  Just remember that you have to do any operations inside the parentheses first!
