"There are 4 cups in 1 quart" or 4 cups = 1 quart
Often, math will have big words for very simple concepts. For example:
the Multiplicative Identity (that is, 1)
Any value multiplied by 1 remains the same, but the units may change.
1 = (4 cups) / (1 quart)
1 = (1 quart) / (4 cups)
So, choose the one that allows units to cancel.
To go from quarts to cups:
3 quarts
(3 quarts) * (1)
(3 quarts) * ( (4 cups) / (1 quart) )
( 3 * 4 cups) [note: quarts cancel]
12 cups
To convert cups to quarts:
12 cups
(12 cups) * 1
(12 cups) * ( (1 quart) / (4 cups) ) [note: multiplying by (1/4) is the same as dividing by 4]
( 12 / 4 quarts)
3 quarts
