John needs to rent a 24 foot truck for one day to help his family move to a new house. Budget charges $50 plus 79 cents per mile. Ryder charges $40 plus 99 cents per mile. Determine the number of miles for the costs of both companies to be equal. What will be that cost?

x=# of miles

50+0.79x=40+0.99x

50-40=0.99x-0.79x

10=0.20x

100=2x

x=100/2

x=50 miles

$50+50*($0.79)=$50+$39.50=$89.50

$40+50*($0.99)=$40+$49.50=$89.50

Let Y = cost of the truck rental

 

for truck 1

 

y = 50+.79x

 

for truck 2

 

y = 40 +.99x

 

now you want to know when they are equal

 

so set them equal and solve for x

 

50 + .79x = 40 + .99x

 

.2x = 10

x = 50

 

now check  it

 

50 + .79(50)

50 + 39.5   = 89.50

 

40 + .99(50)

40 + 49.5   = 89.50    (and it all checks out
