Pontstan (otherwise known by its generic name and active ingredient: mefenamic acid) belongs to a class of medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (or NSAIDs). These medications work by inhibiting our body's production of compounds (leukotriene, prostaglandins) that are ordinarily involved with inflammation and pain. By blocking the production of these compounds, NSAIDs can be a key player in pain management.
Mefenamic acid typically reaches peak level in the bloodstream about 2-4 hours after it is taken.
