and then last one Alice left the study group traveling 12 mph. Then, 2 hours later, Jennifer left traveling the same direction at 18 mph. How long until Jennifer catches up with Alice?

Shelly, remember that distance = rate x time, or d = rt.

 

Since the distance travelled will be the same when they meet, we set the two distances equal to each other.

 

Alice got a 2-hour head start, so her d = 12(t + 2). Alice's distance is 18t.

 

12(t + 2)  = 18t

  12t + 24 = 18t

           6t = 24

              t = 4

 

Jennifer will meet Alice after 4 hours.
