Hello Staci.
With each question first look at how many books make 1 inch for the different widths
1.) For 1/4in books 4 books = 1 inch (1/4 +1/4 +1/4 +1/4 = 4/4 =1)
so for the first group 24 books 1/4in we can do 24(books) ÷ 4(4 books = 1 inch) = 6
So the first group is a total of 6 inches with using 2 shelf and with 5 inches remain.
2.) 64 books 3/4 inches for this one we need to get a whole number
we can add 3/4 with itself till we get a numerator(top number) that can be divided by 4
3/4 +3/4 +3/4 +3/4 = 12/4 12/4 = 3 so 4 books = 3 inches
64(books) ÷ 4(books) = 16 groups(of 4 books) remember each group of 4 books equals 3 inches
16 x 3 = 48inches of books which is 5 shelves with 7 inches remaining.
3.) 1/2 in 2 books equals 1 inch
26 books 1/2 inch 26(books) ÷ 2(books) = 13 groups of 2 equals 13 inches
13 inches of books with 2 shelves and with 9 inches remain .
