What does the size of the font translate to exactly?

I have a 40 pixel font that I'm trying to translate into custom images. I'm trying to match the size of the image exactly, but I'm having some problems getting exactly the right size. Basically, what it comes down to is this. When a font says it is X pixels, what does this physically mean?

Not sure what program you are using. Illustrator is great for the kind of issue that you are talking about. Many times I have just placed the image and then on a new layer, added text. I can then see both and tweak the size of the text to my needs. As for your question of pixels, and what that means, Pixels are just the number of small dots that make up an image. For example, at image that is 72 Pixels will be much smaller in size and much harder to enlarge than say an image that is 300 Pixels. In typography, a point is a tiny measurement that is the standard for measuring font size. There are approximately 72 points in 1 inch. So, 36 points is the equivalent of a half inch or so. All of this being said, try and have your photo in one layer. Then size your type to fit and put it in a totally separate layer.
