Learning is all about making GREAT mistakes!
Hi Aleah,
When dividing a fraction by a whole number (or the other way around) always multiply by the reciprocal! A reciprocal of a number is what we refer to as multiplicative inverse. That means that the product of a number and its reciprocal is equal to 1. For example, the reciprocal of 12 is 1/12; so 12 * 1/12 = 12/12 = 1.
To answer your question (9/10) / 12 = ?
First determine the reciprocal of 12, which is 1/12.
Second, multiply by the reciprocal
(9/10) / 12 = (9/10) * (1/12) = (9*1) / (10*12) = 9/120.
Finally, always simplify your answers!
9/120 = 3/40 (Dividing everything by 3)
Hope that helps!
Thanks!
