In this case, 2 1/2 gallons of ice cream equals 2.5 gallons of ice cream. Since this amount is shared equally throughout 10 people, it is divided among them - hence, division has to be used. So, you divide 2.5/10, and whether you use long division or a calculator, the answer should be that every person ate 0.25 gallons of ice cream, or 1/4 a gallon of ice cream.
