What will the dimensions be?

The morton's can afford 220ft of fence material. They want to fence a rectangle area with a length that is 20 feet more than twice the width. What will the dimensions be?

solve for the length and width. Recall perimeter=l+w+l+w or perimeter=21+2w where w=width and l=length

2w + 20 = length

 

2w + 2(2w + 20) = 220

2w + 4w + 40 = 220

6w + 40 = 220

6w = 180

w = 30

 

The width is 30 feet and the length is 80 feet.
