States can differ and since I don't know your state I will answer this as a general answer suggesting you see a local family law attorney to find out more.
In general, alimony is based on years of marriage and income differences between husband and wife (supporting spouse pays dependent spouse). It is based on a way of living and means and the questions come up, can the dependent spouse support their needs without financial assistance from the supporting spouse once divorced.
Alimony can be in monthly payments for a certain period of time or in a lump sum. Many stipulations can come with alimony such as re-marry, length of time, future job, etc and your family attorney can go over all these with you when writing up the considerations for the opposing family attorney.
Hope this helps.
