A 13-inch piece of steel is cut into three pieces so that the second piece is twice as long as the first place,and the third piece is one inch more then three the length of the first piece.find the lengths of the pieces

These used to confuse me, too!

f + s + t = 13

s ÷ 2f

t = 3f + 1

Now, the equal sign means that whatever is on either side are the same and can be swapped out for each other.

f + 2f + 3f + 1 = 13

6f = 12

f = 2
