The area of a rectangle is 36m². The length of the rectangle is 5 meters longer than its width. Determine the dimensions of the rectangle.

w = width

w + 5 = length

w (w + 5) = 36

w² + 5w = 36

w² + 5w - 36 = 0

(w + 9)(w - 4) = 0

w ∈ {-9, 4}

 

Measure is only positive, so w = 4 and length = 9.
