Not all critics ignore Escher. There are several books and articles on his work.
Those who do appreciate his trompe-l'oeil paradoxes often say that he is a mere draftsman, not a true artist. Others claim that his optical illusions represent a one-note paradigm.
I disagree, but there is some sort of consensus about this -- unfortunately.
Incidentally, I own several Escher prints -- including the hands drawing each other -- etched on glass!
