Fundamental and In-Depth Music Theory for an Absolute Beginner?
2 Answers By Expert Tutors
The guitar is a chordal instrument, so you might start with learning how chords work. That said, how chords are *voiced* on the guitar is shaped by its physical construction - how the hands fit on the strings, and how the strings are tuned. So starting with a simple direct, text that's not instrument specific, like the two slim volumes of the Berklee Music Theory book could be a good way to start. From there you can can progress to more complex materials.

I recommend getting a guitar teacher to help you to understand how music works (theory) as applied to your instrument. Theory needs to be practiced. First on your instrument and then through composition, on your instrument and then on paper.

I was in the same boat as you with no music theory experience at all, but planned on earning my Bachelor of Music Education. Ultimately, I learned by going to the university and have face-to-face teaching that made me learn. Maybe, try some youtube videos to get some type of introduction to it. But I would say go audition at a university if that is your ultimate goal. The professors are extremely knowledgeable and almost always willing to help you outside of class.06/18/19
