comparing pre-test scores with post-test scores

I gave a pre-test to 72 students. The average of the scores was 8.8

Later a gave the same test (post-test) to the same 72 student. The average of the scores was 66

How can I show a comparison of how much the average of the scores increased (from 8.8 to 66)?

If all you are comparing is the 2 test scores, then a paired samples t test would be appropriate because you have 2 scores from each participant; the scores are related or paired.

If you had additional variables in the analysis, such as a teaching method, review versus non-review session, placebo vs drug condition, etc, then you would have to run a different type of analysis, such as an ANCOVA.
