In most cases being able to reach an octave is all that you need to do in order to play most piano music.
The late famous Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha was only about 4'9" and could barely reach an octave. She didn't let that stop her from having a major concert career.
There are ways to expand one's reach. It's not normal to spread the fingers apart. It just takes a little practice.
