The number of 25-pound bags of flour the store orders is 40 more than half the number of 5 pound bags. If the store orders a total of 55 bags of flour, how many 25 pound bags does the store order?

Let y= number of 25 pound bags

x+y=55 or y=55-x total bags=55

y=40+x/2 number of 25 bags is 40 more than half the number of 5 pound bags

set the expressions

for y equal to each other

55-x=40+x/2

solve for x

15=3x/2

x=10

y=55-x=55-10=45

x=10, the number of 5 pound bags

y=45, the number of 25 pound bags
