First, we should understand some key words:
"...less than..." also means, "subtracted from"
"...the product of..." means the next numbers will be multiplied ( or "times"-ed).
ORIGINAL PHRASE: 9 less than the product of 5 and 7.
IN OTHER WORDS: 9 subtracted from 5 times 7.
"Subtracted from" is awkward, it means the first number should be taken away from the last number. I like to switch the numbers around and just say "minus" in between. For example "3 less than 5 is 2" could e written, "5 minus 3 is 2". Same meaning, different order.
WORDS SWITCHED AROUND: 5 times 7 minus 9.

and "minus" looks like -
