For this problem, we need to look at the data given in the word problem. The weight of 1 brown thrasher is 2 9/10 ounces.
The weight of the ptarmigan is said to be twice as much as 3 brown thrashers, so that means that we can look at this problem two different ways.
Way #1:
We establish the weight of three brown thrashers and then double it.
3 (2 9/10) = 6 27/10
We convert the improper fraction and add to our whole numbers we have from the multiplication.
27/10 = 2 7/10
2 7/10 + 6= 8 7/10
Or we could have converted the weight to an improper fraction before multiplying and then simplified it.
2 9/10 = 29/10
3* 29/10 = 87/10
87/10 = 8 7/10
Now double that weight for the ptarmigan:
2* 8 7/10 = 16 14/10
14/10 = 1 4/10 or 1 2/5
Final weight is 17 2/5 ounces.
Way #2
We know that it takes two times the weight of 3 brown thrashers to make the weight of 1 ptarmigan.
2*3 = 6
So the weight of 6 brown thrashers would equal the 1 ptarmigan.
6 * 2 9/10 = 12 54/10 ounces
54/10 = 5 4/10 or 5 2/5
12 + 5 2/5 = 17 2/5 ounces.
Hope this helps.
