Let's look at a simpler problem first. If the school bought 6 cupcakes, of 3 different kinds, I would think that they bought 2 of each kind since 3*2=6 or 6/3=2.
So, since they bought 288 cupcakes, of 6 different kinds, I would say that they bought 288/6 of each kind, which is 48 of each kind.
