The % error equation is
% error = ( | approximate - exact | ÷ exact ) x 100
You approximated, or estimated, 15 lbs. but the actual, or exact, weight was 8 lbs.
| x | is the absolute value of x, meaning it's the positive value.
For example the absolute values of | -5 | and | 5 | are both 5
Plugging in our known values we can get
% error = ( | 15 - 8 | ÷ 8 ) x 100
% error = ( | 7 | ÷ 8 ) × 100
% error = ( 7 ÷ 8) x 100
% error = (0.875) x 100
% error = 87.5%
