That just depends.
In almost all states, you must first attend an ABA-accredited law school and graduate prior to applying for the bar exam. In a very few exceptional states, there are other ways to meet the requirement to sit for the bar exam. A few states allow for people who attended a non-ABA-accredited law school to sit for the bar exam. California, along with 3 other states, permit someone who has not attended law school to sit for the bar exam if they complete a rigorous legal apprenticeship.
For the most part, however, no. Not just anyone can take the bar exam.
