If you think of 9 miles as your total, you are separating that total whole into 5 equal parts. So you can divide 9 miles by 5 to get what 1 part or 1/5 of 9 miles would be. Then, you can either repeatedly add the 1/5 you found three times or multiply your 1/5 you found by 3 to find out how much 3 of the equal 1/5 pieces of 9 miles would be.
The "trick" way of doing it would just to simply multiply 3/5 x 9, which would be 3 x 9 and then dividing that answer by 5.
