3 grade math word problem

Hi!  I have a question.  

Question #1.

Ty writes 4 x 10 to show that he has 4 bunches of 10 flowers.  Which is another way for Ty to show the product of 4 x 10?

 

a.  4 + 10

b.  2 x 10 = 20 and 2 x 10=20, 

      Then 20 + 20=40

c.  5+5+5+5

d.  2 x 10 = 20

 

 

my daughter did one problem similar the question above but her teacher said she didn't wrong.

the question is.

 

which is another way to show the product of 4x8?

 

a. 2x8=16 and 2x8=16 then 16 + 

     16=32

b.  4x2=8 and 4x2=8 then

     8 +8=16

In question 1, the only answer is b, because the 4 bunches of 10 can be grouped into 2 bunches of 10 plus 2 bunches of 10, or;

 

4x10= 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 2x10 + 2x10.

 

Similary, the only answer for the second question is a, where;

 

4x8= 2x8 + 2x8. This appears to be demonstrating the distributive law of math.

Hi Michelle,

 

The answer must be equal to the original method.

 

4 * 10 = 40

 

so the only answer that would make sense is (b)

 

2 * 10 and 2* 10  becasue this = 40

 

the others don't equal 40
