2x + 14 = 58

Let the larger number be x, Let the smaller number be y, x+y=58 (Formula 1), x=y+14 (Formula 2), Substitute Formula 2 into Formula 1, y+14+y=58, 2y=44, y=22, The smaller number equals to 22.
