Hi Carl, 

x = a-b = 5 1/8 - 8 1/2  --> Make this an improper fraction

So 5 1/8 = 5*8 = 40 + 1 --> 41/8 

And 8 1/2 = 8*2 = 16 + 1 = 17 --> 17/2

Now x = 41/8 - 17/2

Now you can subtract by finding a common denominator....
