Question

Flying against the wind, an airplane travels 7830km in 9 hours. Flying with the wind, the same plane travels 10,480km in 8 hours. What is the rate of the plane in still air and what is the rate of the wind?

With the wind, the rate is the plane speed plus the wind speed. Against the wind, the rate is the plane speed minus the wind speed.

9(p - w) = 7830

8(p+ w) = 10480

p - w = 870

p + w = 1310

2p = 440

p = 220

220 + w = 1310

w = 1090
