Let the larger number be x
Let the smaller number be x - 7
Now, we add these two expressions and set them equal to 19 according to the problem.
x + x - 7 = 19
2x - 7 = 19
2x = 26
x = 13 <------------The larger number
To determine the smaller number all we need do is to substitute the value of 13 for x.
x - 7
13 - 7 =
6 <----------The smaller number
Now, we need to check our work. Is 6 seven less than the larger number? Yes. Do the numbers add up to 19? Yes, they do.
