What is two-fifths of a class

Carrie class was selling T-shirts to save the rain forest. The shirt were $15.00 each, and they figured that if everyone sold 4 shirts, they would meet their class goal of 100 shirts. As it turned out ,5 students didn't sell any, two-fifths of the class sold exactly 4 shirts each. and the rest sold 8 shirts each. Did they make their class goal? Explain.

4 * N = 100 where N is the # of students

N = 25 students....

5 did not sell any....

2/5 of the class sold 4 shirts, so 2/5 * 25 = 50/5 = 10 students sold 4 shirts each. That's 40 shirts.

25-5-10 = 20-10 = 10 students, who sold 8 shirts each , which is 80 shirts.

So they sold 120 shirts which EXCEEDS their goal of 100 shirts by 20.
