You are going to be adding the amounts together. Start with your whole numbers. 1 + 1 = 2
Now the fractions: 1/3 + 1/2 =
In order to add fractions, you have to have a common denominator (same number on the bottom of both fractions). What number can be divided evenly by both 3 and 2? 6
Multiply the bottom of each fraction by whatever number you need to get six. For the first fraction, that number will be 2, because 3 x 2 = 6. Whatever number you multiply the bottom by, you multiply the top by the same number. 1 x 2 = 2
So, 1/3 x 2/2 = 2/6
Now you do the same for the second fraction. In that case you are multiplying by 3, because 3 x 2 = 6. Multiplying the top: 1 x 3 = 3.
So 1/2 x 3/3 = 3/6
Now you can add the two fractions, because they have the same denominator. You add the top numbers and keep the denominator the same. So 2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6.
Now put that with your original whole number. 2 5/6. She bought 2 5/6 pounds in all, which is about 3 pounds.
