Question

Jackie has a jar with dimes and quarters in it. The jar has 5 more quarters than it has dimes. If the value of the coins is $5.50, how many quarters are in the jar?

The jar has D dimes and Q quarters...

Q = D + 5 <--- the jar has 5 more quarters than dimes

25Q + 10D = 550 <---- amount is in pennies

25 ( D+5) + 10D = 550

25D + 125 + 10D = 550

35D + 125 = 550

35D = 425

D = 425/35 = 85/7 = 12 and 1/7

Q = 17 and 1/7 = 120/7

CHECK:

25* 120/7 + 10 * 85/7 = 3000/7 + 850/7 = 3850/7 = 550

So the answer is correct!!! there are 12 and 1/7 = 85/7 dimes

and 120/7 = 17 and 1/7 quarters
