6x - 2 = 2x + 18

(Add 2 to both sides of the =)

6x = 2x + 20

(Subtract 2x from both sides of the =)

4x = 20

(Divide 4 from both sides of the =)

x = 5

(Now plug in 5 as x in the original equation to recheck)

6(5) - 2 = 2(5) +18

30 - 2 = 10 + 18

28 = 28

Use inverse operations to combine like terms on opposite sides of the equals sign; first subtract 2x from each side to eliminate it on the right and leave 4x on the left. Then add 2 to each side to eliminate it on the left and leave 20 on the right. 

6x-2=2x+18

turns into: 

4x = 20. 

If 4 times something is equal to 20..... you can find out what that "something" is by dividing each side by 4..... can you finish this?
