The sum of three times a first number and twice a second number is 8. If the second number is subtracted from twice the first number, the result is 3. Find the numbers.

3F + 2S = 8

2F - S =3

where F = 1st number and S = 2nd number

S=2F-3 (from the second equation)

Substitute

3F + 2(2F-3) = 8

3F + 2F - 6 = 8

7F = 14

F=2

S=1 by substitution of F=2 into the equation for S
