How do I show work for this problem?

Issac is starting a garden. He has a space that is 8 feet wide by 7 1/2 feet long. If he wants to put in a fence that goes around the outside of the garden, how many inches of fencing does he need?

Perimeter is the length around an area. Since there are four sides to the area the perimeter formula is:

P = 2w + 2l, where w = width and l = length

P = 2(8) + 2(7.5)

P = 16 + 15

P = 31 feet of fence

To convert to inches multiply the number of feet by 12:

P = 31 * 12 = 372 inches

Answer: 372 inches of fence
