Okay, so first let's get the correct equation.
-7 + n = 12 We are taking negative 7 and increasing it by some unknown number which we are calling n, making that expression equal to 12 because the problem states "is 12." Now let's solve.
-7 + n = 12
n = 19
Now, let's notice a few things here. First, whatever we do to one side of an equation we MUST do to the other. In the above case, we wanted to get "n" to itself so we added a positive 7 to cancel the seven's on the left side of the equation. But now, we needed to add 7 to 12 and we arrive at 19.
