Perimeter Area and volume

Question

square garden each side is of which is 22 m long. Inside it is a plot measuring 20 m each way. How far will i travel in going round the plot, if:

q1. I walked along the outer side of the path (perimeter) - outside square?

q2. I walked along the inner side of the path - perimeter of the innermost square

q3. I walked along a line drawn on the middle of the path (middle square) perimeter?

So there are 3 squares:

The outer square where each side is 22 m;

The middle square which we don't know the sides;

The inner square which is inside the middle square which sides are 20 m.

Answer 1

For a square the perimeter is P = 4s where s = length of one side, for a rectangle P = 2L + 2W,

where L = length and W = width.

1. P = 4s = 4 x 22 = 88 m
2. P = 4s = 4 x 20 = 80 m
3. If we drew a line down the center of the inner square, that would result in a rectangle with length and width 20 and 10 m:

P = 2L + 2W = 2 x 20 + 2 x 10 = 40 + 20 = 60
