What is 2(-4h - 13)= 37 + 13h

The directions say I have to solve then check my work. I'm confused on this one because I got 2(-17h)=50h, and I know that is wrong. Can any one help me please.

First, distribute (multiply) the 2 across the terms within the parentheses:

 

2*(-4h) - 2*(13) = 37 + 13h

-8h - 26 = 37 + 13h

 

Subtract 37 from both sides:

 

-8h - 63 = 13h

 

Add 8h to both sides:

 

-63 = 21h

 

Divide both sides by 21:

 

-3 = h

 

Check:

2*(-4h - 13) = 37 + 13h

2*(-4*(-3) - 13) = 37 + 13*(-3)

2*(-1) = 37 - 39
