Hello Paige
Let x = the 1st day, y = the 2nd day and z = the 3rd day
Eq 1) On the second day of shopping they realized they spent $120 more than the first day..... y = x + 120
Eq 2) The third days total was twice as much as the first days total............ z = 2x
Eq 3) The three day total was $1320.......... x + y + z = 1,320
Substitute Eq 1) and Eq 2) into Eq 3), you get
x + (x + 120) + (2x) = 1,320
4x + 120 = 1,320
4x = 1,320 - 120
4x = 1,200
x = 1,200 / 4 = 300
y = 120 + x = 120 + 300 = 420
z = 2x = 2(300) = 600
x = 1st day = $300
y = 2nd day = $420
z = 3rd day = $600
