A square has sides of length (x+1) cm find the value of x if:

 

a) the perimeter of the square is 66cm

 

b) the perimeter of the square is 152.8cm

a) If the perimeter of the square is 66 cm.

P = 4a  Where P equals the perimeter, and a equals the length
4 (x+1) = 66
4x + 4 = 66 
4x = 62 
x = 15.5 cm




Check our work: 

P = 4 (x + 1) 
P = 4 (15.5 + 1)
66 = 62 + 4
66 = 66 


b). If the perimeter of the square is 152.8 cm

P = 4a
152.8 = 4 (x + 1) 
152.8 = 4x + 4
148.8 = 4x 

 
37.2 cm = x 


P = 4 (a) 
152.8 = 4 (37.2 + 1)
152.8 = 148.8 + 4 
152.8 = 152.8
