directed line segment

Question

point p is on the directed line segment from point X (-6,-2) to point Y (6,7) and divides the segment in the ration 1:5.

what are the coordinates of point P?

i did the work but it doesn't look right

my answer  was (3.5,6.8)

its not plotting correctly

Okay, so (x,y) = ( x₁ + a/a+b(x_{2 -} x₁)  , y₁ + a/a+b(y2 - y₁) )

So a:b  = 1:5

 

(x₁,y₁) = (-6, -2)  

(y₁, y₂) = (6, 7)

 

If you plug in those numbers for the variables, you should get:

 

(x,y) = (-4, -1/2)
