A tire company produced 3066 tires in one day working two shifts. The second shift produced 70 tires fewer than ten dash fourths of the number of tires produced by the first shift. Determine the number of tires produced by the second shift.

The answer is 2170 i need to know the steps on how to get there.

Let x = number of tires produced by 1st shift

Let y = number of tires produced by 2nd shift

 

x + y = 3066

y = (10/4)x - 70

 

x + (10/4)x - 70 = 3066

(4/4)x + (10/4)x = 3066 + 70

(14/4)x = 3136

x = 3136(4/14) = 896

 

x + y = 3066

896 + y = 3066

y = 3066 - 896

y = 2170

 

1st shift produced 896 tires

2nd shift produced 2,170 tires
