When they ask to solve an equation, all they ask for is to let "X" be on one side of the equation and any other numbers in the other side of the "=" (equal) sign of the equation.
so
8x + 2 -3x =24x -8 (original equation)
8x + 2 -3x -24x=24x -24x -8 (subtract 24 from both sides & set toghether all numbers that have x) ---->
-19x +2 = -8 (now let x be alone on one side of the equation without any other number, subtract
2 from both sides)
-19x +2 -2 = -8 -2
-19x = -10 ( Note that X is being multiplied times -19, so do the opposite of multiplication to
get ride of that -19 and let x be alone in one side of the equation)
-19x/-19 = -10/-19 ( the -19 goes away from the x because -19/-19 is one, and x times 1 is itself)
x= 10/19 (the negative signs go away because we have negative in numerator (the top) and
negative in the denominator (the bottom) and negative times a negative is always possitive)

The goal of solving an equation like this is to get the x all by itself on one side of the equals sign. To do this you must do the same operation to both sides of the equation until the x is alone. You can start by combining like terms, then gradually get rid of any numbers on the same side as the x. For example:
8x+2-3x = 24x+8
5x+2 = 24x+8 <--- combined like terms on the left side
-5x -5x <---subtracted 5x from both sides (to get the x's together)
2 = 19x+8
-8 -8 <---subtracted 8 from both sides (to remove it from the x side)
-6 = 19x
/19 /19 <---divided both side by 19 (to remove it from the x side)
-6/19 = x <---that's the solution!
