This is a trinomial which will yield two answers since your leading variable is squared.

 

x² - x - 6               original problem

 

(x+2) (x-3)            factored.  The last terms have to be multiplied to give you -6 and the sum of the inner and outer                                  terms must add to -1

 

x + 2 = 0 and x - 3 =0  Set each term to zero to find the values for x

 

x = -2 and x = 3

Real quick.. a= 1, b= -1 and c=-6

 

Look at the other problem I just did for you more details.

 

The Determinant is b^2-4ac= (-1)^2-4(1)(-6)= 25.  Take the square root of that.  So, it is 5 and -5

 

So, we have

 

x= [-b -5]/2                             or [-b+5]/2

     (1-5)/2                                     (1+5)/2

  x= -2                                      or  x=3
