A jet travels 4632 mi against the wind in 8 hours and 6232 mi with the wind in the same amount of time. What is the rate of the jet in still air and what is the rate of the wind?

y= speed of wind

against the wind means the wind slows you down and with the wind means the wind pushes you and speeds the jet up

speed x time = distance

8(x-y)=4632

8(x+y)=6232

divide both sides of each equation by 8

 

x-y=579

x+y=779

add the two equations together

2x=1358

divide by 2

x=679

subtituting back into either equation 679-y=579, then y=100

rate/speed of the jet in still air is 679 miles per hour, rate of the wind is 100miles per hour
