Then, x+y = 42 and xy = 36

 

Since x+y = 42, y = 42-x.

 

So, x(42-x) = 36

 

     x² - 42x + 36 = 0

 

     x = [42 ± √1620] / 2 = [42 ± √324√5] / 2

 

                                     = [42 ± 18√5] / 2

 

                                     = 21 ± 9√5

 

The numbers are 21 + 9√5, and 21 - 9√5.
