Cindy,

This -3x +5y =44x+5y=32 is a bit ambiguous.

My guess is that it is actually two equations in two unknowns:

-3x +5y = 32    and     44x+5y=32

Can you clarify the problem?

BruceS, it is actually two seperate equations

-3x + 5y = 44

x+5y - 32

If you eliminate y first, then the process is lot simpler.

-3x + 5y=44 ......(1)

x + 5y = 32 ......(2)

(1)-(2): -4x = 12

x = -3, y = (32-x)/5 = (32+3)/5 = 7
