Omar: use the formula for the perimeter of a triangle, and, in this case, all sides are equal.  So, the perimeter of the triangle is 3x

 

Each side of the square is x + 4.

 

Perimeter of square = 2l + 2w = 2(x+4) + 2 (x + 4)

 

The is equal to 42 + 3x (perimeter of the square is 42 inches more than the perimeter of the triangle)

 

So, 2(x+4) + 2 (x + 4) = 42 + 3x.

 

Solve for x.

The side measure of the triangle is X.

The side measure of the square is X+4.

 

The perimeter of the square is 4(x+4) = 4x + 16

THe perimeter of the triangle is 3x 

 

3x + 42 = 4x + 16

 

42 = x + 16
