A store sells two brands on peanut butter. One brand sells for $4.65 per jar while a no-name brand sells for $4.15 per jar. If there were 240 jars of peanut butter sold for a total of $1048.00, how many of each were sold?

Let x = the number of jars costing $4.65 that were sold

Let y = the number of jars costing $4.15 that were sold

x + y = 240     y = 240 - x

4.65x + 4.15y = 1048

4.65x + 4.15(240 - x) = 1048

4.65x + 996 - 4.15x = 1048

.50x = 52

x = 104 jars

y = 240 - 104

y = 136 jars

Hello Courtney!  All these simultaneous equations are very similar.  Here, you need to know two things - how many 4.65 jars and how many 4.15 jars.  So, you need two equations for these two unknowns.

 

First equation: 4.65x + 4.15y = 1048

 

Second equation: x + y = 240

 

Can you take it from here?  Solve for one variable in terms of the other, then substitute and solve.
